When a mattress needs professional cleaning
A mattress protector stops what lands on it. It does not stop what the mattress has already absorbed over years of use: perspiration, dust and spills that went straight through.
So the question is not how old the mattress is, but what has built up inside it. You can go through the list below yourself, with no equipment at all.
The signs that it is worth doing
- a visible stain, or a mark that has spread beyond where it landed
- a stale smell in the room that airing does not clear
- before moving in, or before the first season, after a winter with the apartment shut up and damp
- after an illness, or after a long period spent in bed
- children's beds and guest-room mattresses, which get used in bursts
- a second-hand or inherited mattress, before anyone sleeps on it
What a deep clean reaches, and what it does not
Extraction cleans the upper layer of the mattress, the part that takes the soiling. Solution goes into that layer and is drawn straight back out with whatever it has dissolved.
It does not touch the core, and it does not restore a mattress that has structurally collapsed. If the mattress has sagged or broken down, cleaning will not fix that, and we will say so rather than take the job.
What to expect afterwards
The mattress is damp. A final pass without solution takes part of the moisture back out, and the job is planned so the mattress has time to dry before anyone sleeps on it; how long depends on the thickness and type of filling and on how well the room airs, the same as with a sofa.
Old marks that have soaked into the filling may not disappear completely. We see that when we look at it and say so straight away.
