How long a sofa takes to dry after cleaning
A few hours. After extraction cleaning a sofa is damp to the touch, and how long it stays that way depends on the fabric, the padding and how much air moves through the room.
A thin dining-chair seat and a deep three-seater with a foam cushion are not the same job, so they do not dry in the same time.
Fabric, padding, air
- Fabric. A densely woven microfibre holds less water in its surface layer than a loose chenille or a heavy cotton.
- Padding. A foam cushion takes up more solution than a thin upholstered seat, and gives it back more slowly.
- Air. An open window and a through-draught carry the moisture away; a closed room keeps it.
Of the three, the padding decides most. The top of a cushion can feel dry while the middle is still damp, so drying is judged through the depth of the seat, not by touching the surface.
Why it does not take days
The Puzzi 8/1 injects solution into the fabric and draws it back out in the same pass, together with the loosened soiling. A final pass without solution lifts out more of what is left.
What stays in the sofa is only what the machine cannot reach, and that is far less than went in. Less water in the sofa means less water to dry; that is the whole mechanism.
When the room is back in use
You can sit on it once the surface is dry to the touch. Covers and scatter cushions go back only then; put back earlier, they trap the moisture in the seat.
If the room has to be usable at a set time, guests arriving or a dinner, say so when we agree the slot. The job is planned around it, and we would rather hear it beforehand.
A summer afternoon in Dubrovnik
Summer humidity here is high, and on a jugo day, the warm wind from the south, nothing dries quickly, least of all in a flat with the shutters closed. The same sofa then takes noticeably longer than in an aired room, so the forecast is worth a look when you choose the day.
Carpets and mattresses
Same principle, different variables: for a carpet the depth of the pile and the backing, for a mattress the depth and type of filling. A mattress is the case we plan most carefully, because someone sleeps on it the same night; what decides it is in the mattress article.
